FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NJ COPA FC WOMEN TAKE DOWN THE WORCESTER SMILES IN 2-0 VICTORY
METUCHEN, NJ - Saturday June 9th was a great day for the NJCFC Women as they got their much deserved first win of the season against the Worcester Smiles. This game was all about the NJCFC offense as they had an incredible performance.
The NJCFC Women have a multitude of offensive weapons at their disposal and on Saturday against the Worcester Smiles their skills were all on display. The NJCFC offense had an amazing 25 shots with 14 of them on target compared to Worcester who only had 3. A stand out player in the UWS, Jeanine Nunez showed why she’s one of the league’s best when she scored a sublime header in the 24th minute to put the Women up 1-0. Farrell Pomponio hit a pin point cross to Nunez who redirected it back across goal over the keeper and into the back of the net. Nunez finished the game with a season high six shots with three being on target. Nunez was more than deserving of her player of the game title.
Mallensy Vargas, a newcomer to the NJCFC Women’s team had a stellar game as well. She was subbed on in the 54th minute and only needed six minutes until she got on the score sheet. In the 60th minute Vargas and Katarina Nilsson combined to pull of a magical give and go at the top of the box which put Vargas in on goal where she slotted the shot home to give NJCFC a 2-0 lead.
The offensive players weren’t the only stars of the game, The NJCFC defensive line was impenetrable this game. Christina Rodgers, Sydney Cummings, Alana O’Neill, and Mckenzie Meixner played 90 minutes of absolute brick wall defense. The defense held the Smiles to only three shots the whole game and were an integral part of building the offense out of the back.
When asked about the impressive result Head Coach Andrew Giallombardo stated, “It was our most complete game from start to finish across the board. With so many new pieces in the team it took some time to get the chemistry flowing and we knew as a club we had to get a win in the first 3 matches so it’s great we were able to achieve that goal. Words can’t describe how proud we are of the team to keep their heads down and working hard after 2 tough results. We have a great opportunity to go on the road and pick up 6 points from strong opponents but we feel as if we are ready and it’s coming at a good time. We will look to build on what we have done but also take things a step further.”
